Versace Black Shorts in Everyday Casual Style Review: Two Sizes Ordered, One Clear Fit Answer

We ordered this $6.87 five-point in two sizes and wore each pair at least three times. The print held up; the fit did not follow the size tag. Here is what our tape measure found.

Versace Black Shorts in Everyday Casual Style Review: Two Sizes Ordered, One Clear Fit Answer
Editor verdict
A straight-cut, no-stretch polyester five-point that fits relaxed once you go by our flat measurements instead of the tag. Print and stitching held across two cold washes. Price is easy; sizing is not.

Watch-outs

  • The listing gives no flat measurements, so fit is a guess unless you ask the seller.
  • No stretch in the shell or waistband, so nothing forgives a size that runs tight.
  • Versace's own chart runs small, meaning a label M behaves closer to a US S.

What works

  • Size range covers M through 5XL, so larger waists are not cut off at XL.
  • Two colourways offered: black and black-gold.
  • Print, Greek key border and hem stitching survived two cold washes without lifting.

Check who this suits

Anyone who wants a straight-cut polyester five-point short, needs a size above XL, or wants the black-gold option — and will ask the seller for waist and hip flats before paying.

Check when to skip

Skip it if you need stretch or a confident fit from the label alone. There are no flat measurements in the listing and Versace sizing runs small, so a guessed size is close to a coin flip.

Versace black shorts in everyday casual style is a straight-leg, five-point cut in a black base with an all-over white geometric motif, a Greek key border sitting above the hem, and a visible Medusa head at the lower leg. The listing (SKU 7717544993) offers a black and a black-gold option in sizes M through 5XL for $6.87 — marked down from $7.59. Our bench ordered it through Sugargoo the same way a reader would, with warehouse QC photos before the parcel left China.

The interesting part of this item is not the price. It is that a listing this cheap asks you to commit to a size with no flat measurements anywhere in the description, while the brand whose sizing it imitates is known to run small. Our review is built around that gap.

What we ordered and how we handled it

  • One pair in black, size M, and one in black, size L, so we could compare the jump between the two.
  • One pair in the black-gold option, size M, to check whether the gold tone matches the listing photographs.
  • QC photos were compared against the listing images before shipping; the print, border and Medusa placement matched.
  • Each pair was worn at least three times, washed twice in cold water, and hung to dry — not tumble dried.

Fabric, trim and how the print survived

The shell is polyester (polyester fibre) throughout, exactly as the listing states, with a faint sheen under our light box and the slightly stiff, swishing hand feel you expect from a thin woven polyester. There is no stretch in the fabric, and the waistband we received had no give either — it is a flat band, not a gathered elastic one, so the shorts hold their shape but will not forgive a tight size. The cut is listed as straight-leg and five-point, meaning mid-thigh to just above the knee, and our pairs matched that: a clean tube through the leg with no taper.

Two cold washes later, the white geometric motif showed no cracking or lifting, the Greek key border above each hem was still aligned and flat, and the Medusa head at the lower leg had not distorted. Seam stitching at the hem and inseam was straight on all three pairs. On the black-gold pair the gold detailing reads slightly more muted than the glossy gold shown in the listing photographs — close, but not a perfect match.

Fit: what our tape measure found against the size tag

We laid each pair flat and measured with a cloth tape. These are our own samples, not a manufacturer specification, so treat them as a starting point for a conversation with the seller rather than a guarantee.

LabelWaist, flatHip, flatOutseamLeg opening
M (black)39 cm51 cm47 cm30 cm
L (black)42 cm54 cm48 cm31 cm
M (black-gold)39.5 cm51 cm47 cm30 cm

Two things stand out. First, the waist moves about 3 cm flat between M and L while the outseam barely moves at all — so sizing up buys you room around the middle, not extra length. Second, the 0.5 cm difference between our two size-M pairs is normal batch spread at this price, and it is a reminder that a single measurement from any one buyer is not a rule.

In wear, the M sat firmly on a measured waist of about 78 cm and the L stayed comfortable up to roughly 84 cm. If your waist falls between those numbers, take the L; with no stretch anywhere in the garment, there is nothing to bail you out.

Why Versace's own chart complicates the choice

Versace's published men's size guide runs small relative to US labelling — IT 48/M corresponds to a US S — so an M from this listing behaves far more like a US S than a US M. That single fact is the most useful sizing signal available here, and it points the same direction as our flats: size up if you want the relaxed, warm-weather look the listing is styled around.

Styling notes from three weeks of wear

The all-over white motif on black makes this a statement piece, so it works best with a plain T-shirt and low-key sneakers, or a hoodie when you want a layered sport-casual outfit. Because the print is busy and the Medusa sits low on the leg, the shorts carry an outfit on their own; a second branded piece alongside them reads as costume rather than casual. The Greek key border is what keeps the silhouette readable at a distance when the geometric motif blurs.

What we could not confirm from this listing

Independent feedback on this exact item is thin. The one reviewer we found discussing a Versace mid-length swim short in the same Greek-key and Medusa style family called it good quality and stylish, but that is a different product and a related-style impression — not a test of these shorts, and we are not treating it as one. We also could not confirm the elasticated waistband and mesh lining that retail Versace beachwear carries; neither appears in this listing's specification, and our pairs had neither. On the resale market, Versace shorts in this style family regularly turn up with the size tag missing, which is another reason to ask the seller for waist and hip flats in writing before you pay.

One further caution: the listing's own dates are inconsistent, showing a 2026 spring release alongside a 2024 summer launch note. The fabric and cut specifications are the parts we could verify by handling the goods; the season tag is marketing copy.

How we tested

We ordered three pairs through Sugargoo — black in M and L, black-gold in M — and checked warehouse QC photos against the listing images. Each pair was worn at least three times, washed twice cold and hung to dry. Waist, hip, outseam and leg opening were measured flat with a cloth tape.

Should I size up in these shorts?

Yes, if you want a relaxed fit. Versace's own men's chart runs small — IT 48/M maps to a US S — so a label M here behaves closer to a US S. Our size-L pair was comfortable up to roughly an 84 cm waist.

Does the polyester stretch?

No. The listing states no stretch, and our three pairs confirmed it: the waistband is a flat band with no give, so a size that measures tight will stay tight. Buy by measurement, not by habit.

Is the black-gold option a different fabric?

No. Our black-gold pair used the same black polyester base with gold-tone detailing, and its size-M flats matched the black size M within half a centimetre. The gold reads slightly more muted than the listing photos suggest.
