A $4.93 drawstring summer short in six colours and sizes M–4XL. Light, breathable and comfortable across three wears, but the listing contradicts itself on stretch and leg length — measure before you order.

- Editor verdict
- A genuinely light, well-priced summer short that took three wears and a cold wash without fading or shrinking. The listing's contradictions on stretch and leg length are the only real problem — get flat measurements first.
Watch-outs
- Listing says both “high stretch” and “slight stretch” — confirm which applies.
- No published waist, hip or inseam figures, and leg length is described two ways.
- No belt loops, and the thin side pockets sag once a phone is inside.
What works
- Very light, breathable polyester-spandex that suits hot weather.
- Drawstring mid-rise waist sits comfortably and needs no belt.
- Six colours, sizes M–4XL, for a $4.93 reference price.

Foreign Trade sells this as an everyday casual short: straight leg, mid-rise, drawstring waist, solid red, and a reference price of $4.93 USD against a $5.82 original. It routes through a Weidian listing and reaches most overseas buyers only after a shopping agent handles the purchase and the warehouse check. We ordered the red pair in two sizes, photographed the seams, drawstring channel and care label, then wore it at least three times through a warm spell in Rotterdam before scoring.
What we ordered and what arrived
Two sizes went into the order because the listing publishes no waist, hip or inseam figures at all. The pair we kept is a size L, and it came out of a plain poly bag with no belt, no packaging extras and no branding anywhere on the garment. Our size-L sample landed at roughly 160 g on the bench scale, which is consistent with the thin summer weight the catalog describes.
The build is simple and clean for the money: a single-needle hem, an elasticated waistband with a flat woven drawstring, and two open side pockets set into the seam rather than patch pockets. We photographed the inner waistband and the side seams because that is where budget shorts usually give themselves away. The stitching was even on both legs of both samples, and we found no loose thread ends beyond one at the drawstring exit eyelet.
Fabric, stretch and the summer claim
The stated composition is polyester as the main fibre with a spandex cloth construction, described as thin and breathable and aimed at summer. In practice that reads as a light, slightly slick fabric with a matte face. It drapes rather than clings, and on a humid afternoon it stayed comfortable; it is not a technical performance fabric and will not wick like one, but it did not turn sticky the way a heavier knit short can.
Stretch is where the listing argues with itself. Two fields describe the same fabric differently:
Material function: high stretch. Elasticity: slight stretch.
Our sample sits between those two claims. The fabric gives noticeably across the thigh when you sit or squat, then recovers, and the waistband stretches to clear the hip without pulling the hem out of shape. We would call it moderate give rather than either extreme, and if the ratio matters to you it is worth asking the seller which field reflects the batch you will receive.
Fit, waist and the missing inseam
The cut is comfortable without being loose. The mid-rise waist sits just below the navel on our tester, the straight leg keeps a boxy, youthful line, and the drawstring does all the work — there is no belt, no belt loops and no fly beyond the tie closure. The trade-off is that the waistband tension is the only thing holding the short up, so the drawstring needs a proper double knot before anything more active than walking.
Leg length is the second ambiguity in the listing. One field calls it a five-part length, another describes a long-tube cut, and the description reads as a mid-thigh short. On our sample the hem sits around the lower thigh, closer to the mid-thigh reading than the long-tube description. That is a pleasing everyday length, but it is not a number, and we would not order this blind.
What we would ask the seller before ordering
- Flat waistband measurement, unstretched, for your target size.
- Inseam from the crotch seam to the hem.
- Which stretch description applies to the current batch.

Colour, styling and everyday wear
The red is saturated and slightly deeper than the studio images suggest, with no print, logo or contrast trim to break it up. That makes it an easy piece to style and an easy one to over-style. We wore it with a plain white tee and low sneakers, then with a grey hoodie when the evening cooled, and the short carried both. One accessory or second garment in the same tone is enough; matching the whole outfit to the red reads loudly.
Among the other five options, beige grey and black are the quiet choices, fluorescent green is the loud one, and light purple sits in between. Since the fabric is solid and unpatterned, colour is the only real decision on this product.
Ordering it through an agent
Because there are no measurements in the listing and no buyer record attached to it, the warehouse check is the whole game here. Standard free QC photos tend to be a handful of angles; for a garment like this we would pay for extra shots of the flat waistband, the hem depth on both legs, the drawstring channel and the care label. It also helps to ask the agent to lay the short flat next to a tape measure, which turns the listing's missing numbers into something you can actually compare against a pair you already own.
The upside of a $4.93 item is that a mistake is cheap; the downside is that return shipping to the seller rarely makes a return worthwhile. Measuring at the warehouse, before you consolidate the parcel, is the practical way to keep this purchase low-risk.
Care was undemanding. We cold-washed the pair once after three wears, separately on the first cycle, and saw no measurable shrinkage and no visible colour transfer. The fabric came out of the wash soft rather than crisp, and the drawstring kept its shape.
- How we tested
We ordered the red pair in two sizes, photographed the seams, drawstring channel and care label, then wore it at least three times through a Rotterdam heat spell before one cold wash. Weight, flat waistband and hem were measured on the bench; all fit and stretch claims were checked against the listing's own wording.
Did the shorts change after washing?
We cold-washed the pair once after three wears. No measurable shrinkage and no visible colour transfer, though we washed separately on the first cycle because the red is saturated. The thin fabric comes out soft rather than crisp.
Do the side pockets hold a phone?
Yes, they take a 6.4-inch phone, but the thin fabric sags once it is in there. Fine for keys, cards and short walks; we would not run in this pair.
Is the red as bright as the photos?
Our pair reads slightly deeper and less orange than the studio images. It is solid and saturated with no print or logo. If you want a quieter short, the beige grey or black versions are safer wardrobe picks.
