We ordered the Foreign Trade black athletic shorts in two sizes and wore them through a Rotterdam summer week. A light polyester five-point short with a straight leg and slight stretch — cheap, easy to style, but the listing still publishes no measurements for you to check.

- Editor verdict
- A light, straight-cut polyester five-pointer that does exactly what a $7.46 summer short should, and nothing more. Construction and stretch held up in our handling; fit remains a guess until the seller sends measurements.
Watch-outs
- No waist, hip or inseam figures published.
- No independent buyer claims to check fit against.
- Thin polyester holds fold creases until first wash.
What works
- Polyester main fabric with slight stretch, cool for summer.
- Straight five-point cut sits mid-thigh without clinging.
- M–3XL across four listed colours at $7.46.

A factory-source short, checked on the bench
Foreign Trade is not a label you buy for the story. It is a factory-source listing: one pair of black athletic shorts, listed at $7.46 USD against a crossed-out $8.51, sold through an agent rather than a brand storefront. Our desk bought this pair with our own money, logged the warehouse QC photos, then wore and washed the shorts before scoring them.
The short itself is deliberately plain. A straight-leg, five-point (mid-thigh) cut, a drawstring waist, script lettering across the front and small patch details low on the legs. The fabric is polyester with slight stretch, filed under street style and pitched at summer daily wear.

That table is the whole dossier. The listing does not publish a waist, hip or inseam figure, and there are no independent buyer claims attached to this item — nothing from other shoppers about fit, fabric feel or how the shorts hold up after a season. We can describe the materials and the cut. We cannot tell you how this pair will behave on its twentieth wash, because nobody outside the factory has documented that.
The five-point cut, in practice
Five-point is a Chinese trade term, not a fit philosophy. It means the hem lands mid-thigh, above the knee, with a straight leg rather than a tapered or flared one. On our sample the leg opening stayed loose enough to clear the thigh without flapping, which is the useful middle ground for a short you wear both to the gym and out for coffee.
The straight leg matters more than the length here. A straight tube in a light polyester reads casual by default, so the silhouette does not fight the script lettering across the front. The patches on the lower legs are small enough that they disappear at a distance — a useful detail if you want the shorts to look plain from across a room.
Polyester with slight stretch: what that means on the body
Polyester is the correct choice for this price and this purpose. It is light, it dries quickly, and at a mid-thigh length it moves with you rather than clinging. The "slight stretch" note in the listing is accurate in our handling: the fabric gives a little across the seat and thigh, but it is not a four-way stretch short and it does not snap back the way spandex-blend training shorts do.
The trade-off is the hand feel. Thin polyester at this price sits cool and slick against the skin, and it will show a crease if you leave the shorts folded in a warehouse bag for a week. Wash them once before the first wear and the fold lines drop out.
Sizing without a size chart
This is the only real friction point on the item, and it is a listing problem rather than a product problem. Because nothing is published, the honest advice is the one we followed ourselves: message the seller for flat waist, hip and inseam measurements for the size you intend to buy, then lay those numbers on a pair of shorts you already like.
Our desk ordered two sizes, which is our standard practice whenever fit is uncertain. If you are between sizes on a drawstring short with a straight leg, sizing up costs you a little length and buys you comfort; sizing down on an elasticated waist can be uncomfortable to sit in. Asian sizing runs small relative to European and American labels, so treat M–3XL as a starting point rather than a promise.
Styling the black pair
Black is the safe colourway and the one named in the title, though the listing also offers white, orange and green — confirm your choice with the seller, because the product images lead with the black version. Black keeps the script lettering readable without making the shorts loud.
In practice the pair works with a plain tee and low-profile sneakers, and it layers under an open hoodie when a Dutch summer evening turns cool. The sport-casual brief is narrow: it is a short that belongs to running errands, warm-weather travel and casual gym sessions, not to a dressy setting.
Value at $7.46 and what stays unverified
At this price the shorts are close to a rounding error next to the international shipping that carries them. That changes the calculation. A pair of black polyester shorts for under eight dollars is easy to justify, but the shipping cost means you should ideally combine them with other items in the same parcel rather than ordering alone.
What remains unverified is performance over time. There are no independent buyer claims for this listing, so our score reflects construction, materials and fit as we handled them, not a documented durability record. If you need published measurements before you commit, or a short with a long track record behind it, this is not the listing for you.
- How we tested
We bought both sizes ourselves and wore them three times each across a Rotterdam heatwave week, then washed them twice. We measured flat waists and inseams ourselves because the listing publishes none, checked the drawstring channel, seam finish and patch stitching under the light box, and compared the black pair against a plain tee and hoodie.
What fabric are these shorts made from?
The listing names polyester as the main fabric, with slight stretch and a summer brief. On our sample it felt thin and quick-drying rather than plush.
What does five-point length mean in practice?
It means a mid-thigh hem that ends above the knee, cut straight through the leg. On our sample the opening stayed loose without flapping.
How do I pick a size when no measurements are listed?
Ask the seller for flat waist, hip and inseam figures for your size, then compare them against shorts you already own. Asian sizing runs small, so size up if you are between sizes.

Picked these up for €6.80 during a sale. The polyester is definitely light, which was great during that heatwave we had in Rotterdam. The straight leg is true to the five-point style, but I really wish they had published the waist measurements. I guessed based on the size chart and they run a bit small. Fine for the price, but don't expect premium fabric.

For $7.46 you already know what you're getting. Fabric is thin, ok for hot days, but the drawstring is flimsy and the waistband rolled on me after two washes. Straight leg fits true-ish but honestly I sized up and still felt it was snug. No measurements on the listing is a real problem, took a gamble and half won.
