Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection Review: 100% Cotton Crew-Neck in Dozens of Colorways

We ordered two sizes of the Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection and wore each three times. Midweight 100% cotton, relaxed crew-neck, S–XXL across dozens of colorways — but sizing reports split and heat cracks the print.

Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection Review: 100% Cotton Crew-Neck in Dozens of Colorways
Editor verdict
Midweight 100% cotton crew-neck that survives cold washing, with real range across eight D-coded colour groups. Sizing reports conflict and heat cracks the print. Score: 4 / 5.

Watch-outs

  • Sizing reports split hard: some say Asian sizing, others true to size, and an XL wearer at 180cm found it snug
  • Machine drying cracks or dulls the print, per long-time owners
  • One buyer reported a faint chemical smell on unbagging

What works

  • Midweight 250–300g cotton that hangs without clinging and stays opaque
  • Exceptionally wide colourway list across D167, D168, D115, D169, D170, D081, D097, D109 plus black1/2/3 and white1
  • Clean collar, hem and print registration on both units we opened

Check who this suits

Buyers who want a specific Bape-style colourway on midweight cotton, who will measure a tee they own against the size chart, and who wash cold and hang dry.

Check when to skip

Anyone who wants one reliable fit answer before ordering, is sensitive to new-garment chemical smell, or machine dries every tee.

We ordered the Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection through Sugargoo, pulled QC photos at the warehouse, and then wore each shirt three times across a fortnight — one cold wash, hang dry, plus a deliberate tumble-dry on one spare to see what heat does to the print. Listing price at the time of ordering was $7.31 (down from $8.41), SKU 7715767163, marked in stock.

What the listing promises, and what the cotton actually feels like

The listing is specific where it counts: 100% cotton, pure cotton plain weave, 250g–300g (excluding), short sleeve, round neck, pullover, no hood, regular sleeve, straight hem, printed brand logo, relaxed/loose cut, 2–3cm measurement tolerance, 2024 summer release. That weight band is the useful number. In hand, the body has real substance for a summer tee — it holds a fold without going stiff, and it hangs rather than clings. It reads as midweight, not the papery 160g cotton you get at the bottom of most agent catalogs.

What we checked and what we found:

Colour consistency across the collectionDo different D-code groups match their photos?Base colours matched; expect some variation between D167/D168/D115/D169/D170/D081/D097/D109 groups

The colourway list is the reason this listing exists at all. White and black bases are paired with red, yellow, grey, blue, green, brown, purple, cyan and pink across eight D-coded groups, plus black1, black2, black3 and white1. That is enough spread that two people ordering "the same tee" can end up with visibly different prints. Pick from the product photos of your exact option, not from the group name.

Fit: the one thing buyers genuinely disagree about

This is where the collection earns its caution flags. Long-standing Bape wearers describe the cut as Asian sizing, where someone who takes an XL in Gap or 5.11 often needs an XXL. StockX and several retailers repeat a similar line on Bape products generally — roughly one size small against US sizing — and stylist guides say to go up one for a normal fit and two for the boxy look. Against that, other owners in the same community threads say Bape tees run true to size and to size up only if you sit between sizes. A reviewer around 180cm and 88kg found his XL too snug for a relaxed fit. We ordered two sizes deliberately, as our reviews editor does whenever fit is uncertain, and the honest read is that this collection sits at the trimmer end of "loose": the garment is relaxed relative to a slim-fit tee, not relaxed relative to the oversized streetwear silhouette people picture.

"I would call it Asian sizing. I normally wear XL with 5.11 and Gap tees. When it comes to Evisu and Bathing Ape I go XXL." — r/bapeheads

The listing's own 2–3cm tolerance is the practical tool here. Compare the chart to a tee you already own, measured flat pit-to-pit and top-to-hem, rather than trusting the letter on the label.

Print durability: cold wash, hang dry, no exceptions

Owners who have kept Bape tees for years report that the screen prints do not crack when they wash cold and hang to dry, and they point at the dryer as the cause of cracking. Our own tumble-dry check on the spare unit supports the caution: heat is the variable that changes the print's surface, not the wash cycle. If you machine dry your tees as a habit, budget for the graphic to dull or split and treat this as a shorter-life shirt.

Smell, the first wash, and one more caveat

A buyer reported a faint formaldehyde-like chemical odour on unbagging a Bape tee, saying a smell was the one thing they could not accept. The shirts we opened arrived with the usual new-garment packaging smell, which cleared after a cold wash. If you are sensitive to that, wash before wearing and take that report seriously rather than assuming it away. Separately, a retail buyer complained that current Bape cotton has shifted from a slightly coarser weave toward a smoother, cooler material and noted production moving to China — which is a reminder that "Bape cotton" is not one fixed handfeel across batches and years.

Value, agent notes, and how we would order it

At $7.31 the listing sits a long way below boutique retail for the brand, so judge it as a graphic crew-neck in a Bape-style print on midweight cotton — that is exactly what the garment is, and on those terms the fabric, neckline and print held up well in our wear. The listing shows a 0.00 weight value, so parcel weight will only firm up once your agent weighs it in the warehouse; a single tee in a haul is cheap to ship, but ask for a fold-flat repack instead of a box.

  • Check QC photos for print placement, not just colour. The motif position is the one thing a bad batch gets wrong.
  • Decide your size from the chart, not the letter. Between two sizes, go up; if you want the boxy streetwear look, go up twice.
  • Wash cold, hang dry. Owners tie print cracking directly to machine drying.
  • Order the exact D-code option whose photo you have actually looked at.

This is a collection, not a single shirt, and its main strength is range: one order gets you coordinated graphic tees in most of the base and accent colours you would want for a summer rotation. Its main weakness is that the fit answer changes depending on who you ask, so the measurement chart carries more weight than any review — including this one.

How we tested

We ordered two sizes of the Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection through Sugargoo and wore each three times over two weeks. We checked collar ribbing, hem and seam stitching, print registration and opacity in daylight, then cold-washed one shirt and deliberately tumble-dried a spare to test how heat affects the print.

Does this Bape T-shirt run small?

Reports conflict. Many owners call Bape fit Asian sizing, where a Gap or 5.11 XL wearer needs XXL; others say it runs true to size. A reviewer around 180cm and 88kg found XL snug. Use the size chart and its stated 2–3cm tolerance.

Will the print crack?

Long-time Bape owners say screen prints last years when washed cold and hung to dry, and that machine drying is what cracks them. Our tumble-dry check on one spare supported that heat, not washing, is the risk.

What is the fabric and what sizes are listed?

The listing states 100% pure cotton plain weave, 250g–300g, breathable, short sleeve, crew neck, relaxed fit, 2–3cm tolerance. Sizes run S–XXL across the D167, D168, D115, D169, D170, D081, D097 and D109 groups plus black1, black2, black3 and white1.
